A 16-YEAR Douglas boy was released on R500 bail by the local magistrate’s court following his arrest by the Campbell police in connection with the murder of Leon Keith Vermeulen, 40.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Captain Sergio Kock said Vermeulen’s body was discovered in the veld in Schmidtsdrift by a passer-by on March 28.

“The passer-by was tending to his sheep in the veld close to Sector 3 in Schmidtsdrift when he discovered the deceased,” said Kock.

He added that Vermeulen had sustained a gunshot wound to his head.

“The police followed up on information and arrested a 16-year-old boy from Douglas on Tuesday, March 30. The suspect appeared in the Douglas Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, April 1 and received R500 bail.”

Kock said that the case was postponed to May 18.

“The deceased is from Kimberley and resides in Carters Glen. Anyone with information is requested to contact Detective Sergeant Algene Power on 082 4485972. The investigation continues,” concluded Kock.
