A 25-YEAR-old man was sentenced to two terms of life imprisonment after he was linked to a string of violent crimes through DNA and identity parades.

In the cases, that were prosecuted separately, the accused used a similar modus operandi where he threatened his victims at knifepoint and robbed them of their possessions.

The accused, Patrick Visagie, from Kimberley, was sentenced in the Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court yesterday for raping a 25-year old woman on March 17 2018.

Visagie was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment on the charge of rape.

He was also sentenced to one year imprisonment for kidnapping and 14 years imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Captain Tessa Jansen said the woman was approached by two unknown men who were armed with a firearm and a knife when she stopped at the robot.

“They instructed her to move to the passenger seat and they both got into the vehicle. One of the men drove the car from the vicinity of the hospital to Shell Ultra City. Money that was withdrawn from her bank account, was used to purchase drugs. They then drove to the AR Abass stadium.”

She stated that the accused took turns raping the woman in the veld behind the AR Abass stadium and also stole her personal belongings.

Jansen said the woman was left in the veld.

She said the other accused had not yet pleaded to the charges.

Visagie was also sentenced to life imprisonment for raping another 25-year-old woman, two years imprisonment on two charges of kidnapping and 30 years imprisonment on two charges of aggravated robbery in the Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court earlier this week.

Jansen indicated that the woman and her friend were pushed into her car as they were about to make their way home from a hotel on March 25 2018.

“The unknown man also jumped into the driver’s seat of the car and threatened the two women with a knife. He drove the victim’s car to the AR Abass stadium, where he raped her three times.”

She added that a friend of the accused later arrived and also got into the car.

“The accused drove to the garage in Barkly Road where he withdrew R600 from the victim’s bank account. He then drove to a house where he sent his friend to buy drugs and then returned to the veld behind the AR Abass stadium where he raped the victim again.”

Jansen stated that the suspect’s friend also attempted to rape the victim’s friend, but did not when he discovered that she was menstruating.

“The accused fled the scene on foot after robbing both women of their possessions. The woman and her friend drove to the police station where they reported the incident.”

Visagie was also sentenced to ten years imprisonment for raping a 19-year-old woman, two years imprisonment on two charges of kidnapping and 30 years imprisonment on two charges of aggravated robbery in the Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court earlier this week.

Jansen stated that the incident was reported on April 21 2018.

“The woman was sitting with her boyfriend in the car at the train station when they were approached by three unknown men, who waved at them when they passed.

“In a split second the three men returned where one of the accused gained entry into the car by throwing a brick through the window on the driver’s side. The accused, who was armed with a knife, grabbed the key out of the ignition and ordered the driver to unlock all the doors.”

She added that the accused told them that he would not hurt them and only wanted their belongings.

“The accused ordered the boyfriend to sit in the back of the car with the two other suspects.

“The accused got into the car and drove to College Road in Homestead where he parked the vehicle in the veld.”

Jansen indicated that the accused ordered the woman to get out of the car while the other two suspects and her boyfriend remained inside.

“The accused took the woman into the bushes where he raped her. Afterwards he returned to the car where all three men searched the boot of the vehicle and stole the cellphones of the woman and her boyfriend.

“They later fled in the direction of Santa.”

The provincial head of the Family Child Protection and Sexual Offence Unit, Brigadier Nicky Mills, and the Kimberley station commander, Colonel Rikhotso, commended investigating officers – Detective Sergeant Attie Browers, Detective Warrant Office Nelda Lotter and Detective Sergeant Charlotte Mokgari – for their dedication and hard work.
