THE ZF Mgcawu District Municipality will submit the vacancy of Speaker to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for “further handling”.

This follows the resignation of Moses Lebona Moalosi as Speaker and councillor of the district municipality last week.

Moalosi agreed to step down after an explicit sex tape was leaked on social media.

His membership with the ANC has been temporarily suspended pending an internal disciplinary hearing.

ZF Mgcawu district municipal manager Gilbert Lategan said on Monday that the councillor was directly elected and therefore it was not necessary to hold a by-election to fill the vacancy.

“We confirm that the district Speaker, Moses Lebona Moalosi, tendered his letter of resignation to the Office of the Executive Mayor on March 5

“During a virtual special council meeting that was held on March 5, having declared a quorum of the meeting, the resignation of the Speaker was tabled and council accepted the resignation of Moalosi as both a Speaker and councillor of the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality.”

No acting Speaker has been appointed yet.

Meanwhile, the ANC in the ZF Mgcawu region has expelled ANC regional executive member Beatrice Spanneberg after she was found guilty of misconduct.

“The bone of contention of this hearing was the fact that Spanneberg conducted herself on social media in a manner or marked utterance that could bring or has the potential to bring the ANC’s good name into disrepute,” the region stated.

Spanneberg has been given 21 days in which to appeal her expulsion.
