THE DEPUTY Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Dr Namane Dickson Masemola, will lead a key oversight visit to the Northern Cape this week, focusing on the ZF Mgcawu and Pixley ka Seme district municipalities. The visit aims to address longstanding challenges in these areas.
Accompanied by the MEC of CoGTA in the Northern Cape, Bentley Vass, the deputy minister aims to engage with local mayors, councillors and Speakers to address to find solutions to problems highlighted by the auditor-general and CoGTA’s State of Local Government Report.
These visits form part of the government’s drive to improve local governance and enhance service delivery.
They are also a part of a broader national initiative by CoGTA to give municipalities a platform to voice their concerns – especially those that hinder their ability to effectively serve their communities. Through these intergovernmental engagements, local leaders will share their experiences, fostering a collaborative approach to solving problems.
At the end of these discussions, a comprehensive action plan will be developed. This plan will not only address immediate concerns but also include ongoing monitoring to ensure effective implementation and continuous improvement.
The primary objective of these efforts is to enhance the performance of municipalities, enabling them to better meet the needs of their communities. The discussions will focus on key areas such as governance, service delivery, infrastructure development, financial management, and any other systemic issues affecting the two district municipalities.
Through these dialogues, CoGTA aims to ensure that “Every Municipality Works,” ultimately transforming the living conditions of communities throughout the Northern Cape. The initiative represents a proactive step toward building resilient local governments capable of meeting the needs of their citizens.
