THE CHIEF financial officer (CFO) of the Northern Cape Department of Roads and Public Works has been placed on precautionary suspension after R600,000 in cash was apparently found inside his vehicle during a police roadblock.

Department spokesperson Zandisile Luphahla said the CFO was driving the vehicle containing the money during office hours. He said the money was confiscated by the police

“The CFO is on precautionary suspension pending an investigation. The MEC for Public Works, Fufe Makatong, stated that the allegations are being taken very seriously, as such actions could unfairly cast the thriving department in a negative light,” said Luphahla.

“The suspension is precautionary in nature, pending both an internal review and an external investigation into potential transgressions of financial protocols and codes of ethics for senior managers.

“The department emphasises its commitment to transparency and accountable governance. It will provide further updates once the investigation has concluded.”

Police spokesperson Sergeant Dikeledi Gopane said no arrest was effected.

“On Thursday, November 16, 2023, a roadblock was conducted on the N12 and a vehicle was stopped and searched. The police found cash in the vehicle. An enquiry was being opened to investigate the matter. No arrest was made,” said Gopane.
