THE NORTHERN Cape MEC for Roads and Public Works, Fufe Makatong, handed over a building to the Lukhanyo Autism Centre in Kimberley as part of Nelson Mandela Day celebrations on Tuesday.

Department spokesperson Zandisile Luphahla said the building, which is situated on the east wing of the old West End Mental Hospital, would be renovated by expanded public works beneficiaries and learners who have undergone training in plumbing, construction and electrification through various skills development programmes.

“The building is expected to be ready for use in January 2024,” said Luphahla.

“The Lukhanyo Autism Centre will lease the building from the department for a period of five years with an option to renew. The Independent Development Trust donated vegetable garden starter packs for the establishment of food gardens.”

Luphahla explained that the mother of a child with autism, Tshepiso Ngqolo, was motivated to establish the Lukhanyo Autism Centre as there were no schools in the Province that catered for children living with autism.

Makatong believed it was in the best interests of provincial government to make unused buildings available to non-profit organisations.

“We have put out a call for proposals to various organisations in the Province to take this opportunity and apply to lease any of the available buildings. We have advertised those buildings on our social media accounts and website and we are looking forward to receiving applications.”
