THE FRANCES Baard District Department of Education has launched an investigation into an incident where an education care and support assistant at Thabane High School in Kimberley was allegedly assaulted by the principal and his two deputies.

The education assistant, Keotshepile Kowa, opened criminal charges against the school officials after he stated that he was forcefully removed from the school and accused of trespassing.

He said he is also in possession of video footage of the incident.

Kowa stated that he had to undergo a disciplinary hearing on June 2, where he handed in a letter explaining why the matter could not proceed.

He alleged that when he left the principal’s office he was assaulted by the principal and his two deputies.

He stated that the principal had given him an ultimatum to vacate the school in May, after he advised him that he was not able to invigilate a Grade 9 examination as he had not received the necessary training.

“My contract started on February 1 this year, where I was teaching 10 life orientation classes. A pupil whom I assisted committed suicide, whereupon I was advised that instead of teaching life orientation classes I should rather focus on providing psychosocial support to the other pupils during such a difficult time,” said Kowa.

He added that he agreed to perform tasks that were not part of his duties.

“I stopped doing tasks that were not part of my job description in March, as it was proving to be detrimental to my performance. My refusal to do so was perceived to be disrespectful, unruly and defiant.”

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock confirmed that the Kagisho SAPS were investigating a case of assault common with regard to an alleged altercation between a school principal and a fellow colleague.

“No arrests have been made yet. Anyone with information can call Detective Sergeant Kegomoditswe Pebane on 060 972 3264. The investigation continues,” said Kock.

Northern Cape Department of Education spokesperson Geoffrey van der Merwe said they were aware of the alleged incident at Thabane High School.

“Our district office is busy with an investigation into the allegations levelled against the principal and his two deputy principals. Once the investigation is concluded and all due processes followed, the department will take the necessary action, if needed,” Van der Merwe said.
