THE DEPARTMENT of Public Works and Infrastructure hosted a men’s conference in celebration of Men’s Health Month at the old magistrate’s court in Kimberley on Friday.
Acting chief director for communications and marketing at the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, Thami Mchunu said the event was held to enlighten men about men’s health problems and to encourage early detection and treatment of diseases among men and boys.
“Statistics suggest that men in South Africa die from suicide at a much higher rate than women. This clearly shows that South African men are suffering in silence. This year’s event will put much focus on men’s mental health and suicide, encouraging men to seek help and speak up,” said Mchunu.
Mchunu added that the Men’s Clinic, Family South Africa (Famsa), Family Advocate, South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), the South African Police Service (SAPS), Life-Line, Care Line Clinic: Private Psychiatric and Metropolitan were invited to address the conference.
