THE DE AAR Stock Theft and Endangered Species unit arrested a 38-year-old man who was on the run from the police in Somerset East in the Eastern Cape.

The suspect had been working on a farm near Richmond in the Northern Cape and was entrusted with the responsibility of looking after the farmer’s livestock.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said the suspect allegedly sold livestock valued at approximately R87,000 for his own benefit.

“It is also alleged that he stole R90,000 cash after breaking into the farmer’s house,” said Sam.

“Leads directed the investigating team to a farm near Gqeberha, however the suspect was ultimately arrested in Somerset East on July 10.”

Sam added that the suspect is in police custody and is expected to appear in the Richmond Magistrate’s Court soon.

The Pixley ka Seme district commissioner, Major-General Nomana Mtukushe, commended the team – comprising of the acting unit commander, Captain Mbulelo Kholisho, Warrant Officer Robert Sechogela and Sergeant Winston Julies – for “probing all the leads provided by the public”, which resulted in the arrest of the suspect.
