THE DE Aar Police have requested the public’s assistance in tracing and re-arresting an escaped prisoner, Elias Zevuta.

Zevuta is one of three awaiting trial prisoners who escaped from the De Aar Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane said a 72-hour search plan was established, which led to two of the escapees being re-arrested.

Shemane said that Zevuta had originally been arrested for kidnapping.

Shemane explained that preliminary investigations revealed that the three awaiting trial prisoners were detained in the De Aar Magistrate’s Court holding cells, together with other awaiting trial prisoners, when they managed to escape

“They escaped by bending the iron of the burglar door of the cell and climbed through the back section of the court.

“An investigation regarding their escape is under way and the suspects will face an additional charge of escaping from lawful custody,” said Shemane.

The police commended members of the public who provided information that led to the re-arrest of two of the escapees.

The police have appealed to the public not to approach the remaining suspect, Zevuta, as he is considered to be dangerous, but to rather share information with the police that may lead to his re-arrest.

Members of the public can contact the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or the De Aar police at 053 632 9538/053 632 9598 or Detective Services at 082 455 2356 or, alternatively, either send an SMS anonymously to 32211 or use the MySAPS app.
