DA PR councillor Wesley van Rooyen is challenging the termination of his membership with the party.

According to a lawyer’s letter that was addressed to the DA federal executive chairperson on February 24, Van Rooyen was still a member and should be reinstated.

It was indicated that no formal decision was taken surrounding the proposal to use the Skilpadsaal in De Beers as a surgical factory, where Van Rooyen agreed that the initiative could create jobs for the community.

“Our client did support the fact that the item be referred to council for discussion and to vote on the matter. He attended a site meeting at Skilpadsaal. What was presented at the visit, moved our client to consider the item in a more positive light. This does not mean he went against any recommendation or decision of the DA caucus.”

The letter pointed out that Van Rooyen had not attended a caucus meeting that was held in December and was therefore “unaware of the discussions and decision taken”.

“We are of the opinion that our client did not breach the DA federal constitution. Our client was not present in the council meeting when the item was passed. His positive attitude towards the item had no impact on the final decision of council.”

DA provincial leader Harold McGluwa stated that he was not able to comment on the merits of the case until there was an outcome from the federal executive.
