AN SAPS employee was killed and a number of people sustained injuries in three separate accidents on the N12 on Friday night.

The SAPS employee was travelling with two police officers and another employee in a SAPS Nyala when it crashed into a farm fence about 30 kilometres outside of Kimberley at about 4.30pm on Friday. The vehicle skidded for a few metres on the road before it came to a standstill.

Police spokesperson, Captain Olebogeng Tawana, said that the Kimberley police were investigating a case of culpable homicide.

“One person was fatally injured after the vehicle in which they were travelling overturned. Two persons sustained injuries and were transported to the local hospital for medical treatment. The cause of the accident is not known at this stage. The victims were travelling in a Nyala of the Public Order Police,” said Tawana.

Another four people were injured in an accident on the N12 between Kimberley and Warrenton on Friday night at about 9 pm.

Diesel spilled out onto the road for a few kilometres after two bakkies collided with a truck that was transporting a double-deck convoy of motor vehicles and a diesel container.

One of the vehicles was crushed during the incident while the other bakkie came to a standstill in the veld.

Tawana said that the Kimberley police were investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving.

“The occupants of both bakkies sustained injuries, while the driver of the truck survived the accident with no injuries. The cause of the accident is not known.”

Another accident took place on the N12 road just past the flyover, where a vehicle skidded and ended up in the veld.

Tawana added that in a separate accident, the Roodepan police were investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving after a pedestrian was hit by a motor vehicle.

“A pedestrian was knocked down by a vehicle near Roodepan and was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. The investigation continues.”
