COSATU in the Northern Cape plans to take action after being “distraught” over rape and femicide incidents that have taken place throughout the Province.

In some of the most recent cases a number of elderly women were raped Kimberley.

According to Cosatu provincial secretary Orapeleng Moraladi the federation views the various incidents in a very serious light and has vowed to fight for justice and to ensure that communities are safe at all times.

Cosatu will convene an urgent meeting with various stakeholders, including the provincial Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison, the Department of Education and the Premier’s Office, to discuss the issue and to find solutions.

Among what Cosatu labelled as barbaric acts is the case of a 25-year-old Dikgatlong teacher who is accused of raping a 15-year-old pupil between August and October this year.

“The pupil was allegedly raped after hours on the school premises while receiving extra lessons from the suspect,” said Moraladi.

“Other allegations of sexual offences surfaced at a high school in Galeshewe. It is alleged that a teacher has had multiple relationships with female pupils and that he had fathered a child with one of the pupils who matriculated last year.

“We are distraught, especially because these incidents happened amid the launch of our campaign against gender-based violence and a few days before the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign,” Moraladi concluded.
