A TOBACCO consignment worth more than R2 million was confiscated in a joint operation involving the ZF Mgcawu District Highway Patrol, the Northern Cape Department of Home Affairs and the SA Revenue Service customs office.

This action followed raids on two wholesalers in Groblershoop.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said the raids were conducted after the police received information about suspected counterfeit tobacco products.

“The police followed up on information regarding the alleged counterfeit goods and raided the two warehouses. The team confiscated cartons of cigarettes and a large amount of Afzal tobacco with an estimated street value of more than R2 million. The police opened an inquiry and served the owners with notice to provide the original documentation of purchasing the goods,” said Sam.

He added that the community was commended for their assistance in reporting criminal activities.

“The acting provincial commissioner of the Northern Cape, Major-General Luntu Ngubelaga, indicated that the police and all other role-players remain committed to combating illegal activities and ensuring the safety and security of communities,” said Sam.
