THE ONGOING SAPS operation to combat the trade in illicit cigarettes and tobacco products in the Northern Cape netted more success when illicit cigarettes valued at around R10 million were seized at a storage facility in Hartswater.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Meraplo Pilane said illicit tobacco products were confiscated from the facility on November 17.
“The Kimberley Public Order Police, assisted by Crime Intelligence and the South African Revenue Service (Sars) Customs Unit pounced on a storage unit of a supermarket. Tobacco products and cigarettes were confiscated. The value of the confiscated items is estimated at R10 million,” said Pilane
“Customs officials are conducting an investigation into the origin of the counterfeit tobacco products. The Frances Baard District management welcomed the success and reiterated that compliance inspections will continue unabated.”
