Cops seize drugs after high-speed chase

MEMBERS of the Upington Border Police, Upington K9, and the ZFM Highway Patrol confiscated drugs with an estimated street value of R356,800 following a high-speed chase in Upington.

Upington SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Omphile Masegela said the police responded to information about a vehicle that was allegedly transporting drugs to Upington on January 18.

“The vehicle was spotted and the driver attempted to escape. A high-speed chase ensued and the police eventually managed to stop the vehicle.”

Masegela said that the driver was searched and found to be in possession of mandrax tablets.

“The police proceeded to the suspect’s place of residence for his identification documents. Upon arrival, they found tik, khat, various suspected stolen jewellery, cellphones and cash. They confiscated the drugs with an estimated street value of R 356,800, jewellery amounting to R35,000, a vehicle that was used in the commission of a crime and an undisclosed amount of cash.”

Masegela added that a 28-year-old foreign national was arrested on charges of dealing in drugs, resisting arrest, reckless and negligent driving and possession of suspected stolen goods.
