THE POLICE have launched a manhunt for a Northern Cape father who allegedly killed his two-month-old baby boy.

The baby’s body was found abandoned in the veld near the small town of Kenhardt on Sunday.

A community member said on Monday that there were many rumours about how the baby had died.

“The baby boy was found inside a backpack. We are waiting for the outcome of the autopsy results,” said the community member.

She claimed that the mother and father of the baby were involved in an argument and the father allegedly snatched the baby and ran off.

The SAPS spokesperson in the ZF Mgcawu District, Sergeant Omphile Masegela, said the incident happened on March 9.

“The police in Kenhardt are investigating a murder case where a 29-year-old male, the father of a two-month-old infant, allegedly took the child from the mother and ran away,” Masegela confirmed.

“It is alleged that the parents were arguing on Saturday night. During the altercation, the father took the infant, placed him in a backpack and left with him.”

Masegela said the police were alerted about the incident and a search for the suspect ensued.

“The body of the infant was discovered on Sunday morning in the nearby veld. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

“The police have launched a manhunt for the suspect and all relevant units have been deployed to the area in search of the suspect.”

Masegela requested anyone with information that could assist in the apprehension and arrest of the suspect to contact the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Elrich Minies, on 060 984 3520.
