A SOUTH African Police Service sergeant, Claudius Minnaar, 40, appeared in the De Aar District Court on Wednesday on a charge of drunk-driving.

The allegedly drunk police officer was involved in a motor vehicle accident with a marked SAPS vehicle in De Aar on Saturday.

After the police vehicle crashed head-on into a white Volkswagen Polo a video of the incident went viral on social media over the weekend.

The police officer was dressed in civilian clothing at the time of the incident.

National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said the accused was charged in terms of the Road Traffic Act, which regulates the legal limits and prohibitions, for driving while under the influence.

“The act stipulates that no one shall drive or even occupy the driver’s seat of a motor vehicle with the engine running on a public road if their blood alcohol content is over the legal limit,” said Senokoatsane.

He said that the officer was found on the scene on February 18 behind the wheel of a marked double-cab bakkie of the South African Police Service.

“The case was reported and the police officer was charged with infringing the prescribed road traffic laws as prescribed in the Road Traffic Act.”

Senokoatsane added that the matter was postponed until March 28 for the accused to arrange for legal representation as well as for further investigations.
