THE SCANLAN Street construction site, between the education precinct and the central campus of the Sol Plaatje University in Kimberley, was closed on Thursday morning after an employee of the construction firm was diagnosed as positive for Covid-19.

Sol Plaatje University spokesperson Kashini Maistry said on Friday that the employee was tested on Wednesday after experiencing flu-like symptoms on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“The employee concerned was last on site a week ago, however, after confirmation of his diagnosis the site was closed with immediate effect and will be kept closed until the regulatory 14-day period is completed. The university will be kept advised on the matter,” she added.

The direct contacts and office colleagues will be tested for Covid-19 as a matter of priority and they are in a 14-day self-isolation. Should any of them test positive the standard protocols for contact tracing will be put in place.

“Sol Plaatje University and its partners in construction are committed to ensuring the safety of all staff on site and the campus.  All the necessary safety protocols are in place for the prevention of the transmission of Covid-19 and vigilance is continually maintained in this regard,” Maistry added.

“The university wishes the gentleman who has contracted Covid-19 a full recovery and thanks the construction firm for their swift action in containing any possible spread of the virus.”
