Confirmed Covid-19 cases in SA rise to 9 420, deaths to 186

A total of 324 079 Covid-19 tests have been conducted, of which 16 327 were new tests over those reported on Friday

THE NUMBER of confirmed coronavirus (Covid-19) cases in South Africa stood at 9 420 on Saturday – 525 more than the previous day, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize said.

“We are saddened to report eight new deaths, seven from the Western Cape and one from KwaZulu-Natal,” he said in a statement.

“We have also been advised that one of the deceased was a nurse at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town. We pay special tribute to this health worker. We express our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and thank the health care workers who looked after these patients.”

The latest reported deaths brought the total to 186. The total number of recoveries had also increased, to 3 983.

To date, a total of 324 079 Covid-19 tests had been conducted, of which 16 327 were new tests over those reported on Friday, he said.

Of these, the private sector accounted for 160 897 (50 percent), with 7 302 (45 percent) new tests, and the public sector accounted for 163 182 (50 percent), with 9 025 (55 percent) being new tests. The total number of tests now stood at 324 079.

The provincial breakdown of confirmed new Covid-19 cases was as follows:

Eastern Cape – new cases 89; total 1 078; percentage 11.4

Free State – new cases 1; total 134; percentage 1.4

Gauteng – new cases 60; total 1 910; percentage 20.3

KwaZulu-Natal – new cases 54; total 1 308; percentage 13.9

Limpopo – new cases 7; total 51; percentage 0.5

Mpumalanga – new cases 1; total 61; percentage 0.6

North West – new cases 0; total 41; percentage 0.4

Northern Cape – new cases 1; total 28; percentage 0.3

Western Cape – new cases 312; total 4 809; percentage 51.1
