CONDOLENCES have poured in following the death of city police officer Captain Desmond Matsie, who died of complications due to a possible Covid-19-related illness on Wednesday.

Matsie, 55, was in command of Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court police officials and was based at Kagisho police station.

Matsie’s nephew and spokesperson for the Sol Plaatje Municipality, Sello Matsie, said his uncle will be buried on Saturday.

“We are very heartbroken as our uncle passed away during a difficult time, where we are fighting a savage enemy that is unseen, which is also worsened by the stigma attached. While we mourn, we find solace that the sun will rise again,” said Sello yesterday.

He said that virtual prayer meetings and messages had made the pain more bearable.

Sello thanked the medical staff who cared for his uncle during his last moments.

“This is a difficult time for all front-line workers. We are grateful for the personnel and medical staff who took care of my uncle at the time. My uncle, before his passing, expressed his gratitude to the staff,” said Sello.

He urged everyone to adhere to the Covid-19 regulations.

Matsie leaves behind a wife and child.
