THE POSTMASBURG police have raised concerns about the increase in the number of armed robberies involving firearms in the district.

The number of robberies involving firearms has increased over the past three months, with one of the most recent incidents involving a businessman who was shot and killed a week ago.

The Postmasburg station commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Gerrit Mouton, acknowledged incidents of house robberies with firearms reported in Newtown and Boichoko.

According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock, arrests were affected in these cases.

Kock did not elaborate on how many arrests were made in relation to the reported incidents.

He added that the SAPS had also intensified police visibility in hot-spot areas.

The police have urged residents to be vigilant and to take note of suspicious and unknown persons in their respective areas.

Residents are further called to join the community in blue patrollers to strengthen and enhance police capabilities in efforts to collectively eradicate crime.
