THE PORT Nolloth Abalone Company was issued with a fine in the Port Nolloth regional court on June 1 for processing abalone with an estimated street value of R315,500.

Hawks spokesperson Captain Tebogo Thebe on Friday said the company pleaded guilty and was sentenced to R50,000 fine or three years’ imprisonment of which R30,000 or 18 months was suspended for a period of three years.

He added that three suspects were arrested after 880 units of abalone was seized during an operation that was conducted at the Port Nolloth Abalone farm during July 2016.

“The charges against the three suspects were later withdrawn,“ Thebe added.
