A FIRE destroyed the living room area of a house in Boikanyo Street, Vergenoeg on Monday.

The owner of the house, Jabulani Zaula, 49, who was absent at the time of the blaze, was lost for words and was still waiting for the police to arrive and take a statement almost two hours after the incident.

Zaula indicated that he was at work when he was called to rush home as his house was on fire.

He said that it is not clear what caused the fire.

Zaula’s friend, who rushed from work with him, said they arrived at the house to find that community members had already extinguished the fire, using buckets of water, before the fire brigade arrived. “The fire brigade arrived late and found that the community had extinguished the fire.”

The friend later confirmed that the police had arrived on the scene. “The police only arrived at the house two hours later,” he said.
