SOL PLAATJE Municipality has announced that it will once again embark on nightly water shutdowns in Kimberley from Monday.

This is after city residents were left with no water on Saturday and Sunday following a pipe burst on the bulk water pipeline on Saturday afternoon.

Municipal spokesperson Thoko Riet said that both the Riverton and Newton plants had to be switched off in order for the maintenance team to work on the problem.

“The water flow was stopped in order for the team to do repair work. The damaged piece of pipe was cut off and replaced with a new one. Water will be restored to the city by Sunday evening,” said Riet.

She added that the low water levels at the Newton Reservoir have called for the nightly shutdowns.

“Levels at Newton Reservoir are slightly low as a result of the operation that was undertaken. The municipality will embark on nightly shutdowns in order to raise the water levels at the reservoir. Water shutdowns will be from 8pm until 4am,” she said.
