FIVE suspects have been arrested by the police after a Kimberley resident, Marhoom Shahien Richards, was fatally shot during an apparent robbery at his West End home on Monday.

A neighbour apparently alerted the police after being awoken by the sound of gunshots on Monday evening.

It is believed that Richards’ wife and son were found tied up and a cellphone and laptop were taken during the robbery.

When the police arrived at the house they apparently found Richards lying on the stoep with his face covered by a bloody white sheet.

Police spokesperson Dikeledi Gopane indicated on Wednesday that a robbery had taken place and that an empty cartridge was found next to Richards’ body.

“The deceased was shot in the face and neighbourhood watch members led the police to a shack that they saw the suspects running towards in Marikana (informal settlement). Five suspects were arrested and are currently being detained in the police cells,” said Gopane.

An identity parade in connection with the incident is set to be held.

Richards was buried on Tuesday at the Muslim Cemetery in MacDougal Street.
