According to the couple, they were chased out of the clinic by a staff member, who shouted and swore at them for not wearing masks.

A Diamond Park couple have threatened to take further action after they felt that they had been humiliated by staff at the Beaconsfield clinic.

The incident happened earlier this week when the couple took their sick toddler to the clinic.

They were not wearing masks and gloves.

According to the couple, they were chased out of the clinic by a staff member, who shouted and swore at them for not wearing masks.

“There were two nurses, cleaners and a security guard chatting on the verandah outside the clinic. They asked us where our masks were and we told them that we did not have any. They then asked why we did not make our own and we replied that we did not know how to.”

According to the couple, the staff members questioned why they did not research the making of masks online. “I told them that we did not have data.”

The couple added that the staff then chased them out of the clinic grounds and told them to wait at the gate.

“The sister came to us at the gate to fetch the child’s clinic card and disappeared for a while,” said the husband.

He said he was angered by the vulgar language used by one of the cleaners, who, he said, criticised them for not having data.

“I retaliated and argued with her. I even asked them to give our clinic card back if they were not prepared to help my child,” he said.

The couple said they were even more irritated by the fact that the staff themselves were not wearing masks. “They had masks but they were hanging around their necks under their chins.”

The Northern Cape Department of Health urged the family to submit a formal complaint.

“As a department we urge the family to submit their complaint in writing to ensure that the matter is investigated and dealt with in a proper manner,”  said spokesperson Lebogang Majaha.
