A LOCAL businessman, David Christopher Kimber, 62, was released on bail of R100,000 after appearing in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court for allegedly defrauding potential investors.

National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said on Wednesday that the accused was facing various charges, including fraud and money laundering.

“The prosecution, represented by advocate Lentswe Setouto from the Specialised Commercial Crimes Unit (SCCU), alleges that on May 7, 2015, the accused defrauded potential investors through his company, Supermix Mining (Pty) Ltd,” said Senokoatsane.

“He purported to investors that the mining company was producing more than 3,000 carats of diamonds per month and encouraged them to invest in this company. This is while he was aware that the company was producing less than the estimated carats in diamonds.”

Senokoatsane added that these alleged misrepresentations prejudiced investors to an amount of over R3.7 million.

“One of the bail conditions is that the accused should inform the investigating officer of his movements. The case was postponed until August 17.”
