A 32-YEAR-old Norther Cape man who was found guilty of raping two young children was recently handed two terms of life imprisonment by the Postmasburg Regional Court.

National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said the children were seven and eight years old.

“The accused was staying with the children and their mother in Danielskuil. The incidents took place in 2018 when the mother left her two children in the care of the accused. She went to look for her son who was allegedly stabbed. Taking advantage of the situation, the accused went to their mother’s bedroom where the children were sleeping and began to rape them,” said Senokoatsane.

He said the children reported the incident to their aunt, after which the matter was reported to the children’s mother and the police.

“The accused was arrested and charged with two counts of rape. During the trial, the children were able to point out the accused in court. They demonstrated the way in which the accused had covered their mouth with his hand when they cried. They bravely gave details of the pain they felt when he was raping them.”

Senokoatsane said the children’s testimonies served as overwhelming evidence against the accused.

“After the State closed its case, the defence also closed its case without calling the accused to testify.”

He added that the regional court prosecutor, Moloi Kenneth Motsatse, argued that the accused had abused his power and position of trust to exploit the children.

“The prosecutor further argued that the accused lacked remorse and should be given life imprisonment sentences for the heinous crimes committed.

“In sentencing, the court was satisfied with the evidence adduced by the State witnesses, including the medical evidence that the injuries sustained were consistent with penetration.

“The court sentenced the accused person to two life imprisonment terms and ordered that his name be included in the National Register for Sex Offenders. He was also declared unfit to work with children or to possess a firearm.”

Senokoatsane believed that the successful prosecution and removal of the perpetrator from society would provide some justice and closure to the complainants and their families.”
