A 26-YEAR-old Northern Cape man was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment by the Olifantshoek Regional Court on Monday after he was found guilty of raping a 12-year-old girl.

Police spokesperson Captain Olebogeng Tawana said the incident took place in Olifantshoek on April 18, 2016.

“The girl was with three friends when the accused, Morris Mmusi, 26, threatened them at knifepoint and forced them to undress. He accosted the 12-year-old girl and raped her in the veld,” said Tawana.

He added that the three friends managed to flee while Mmusi was busy raping the girl. “The girl’s friends alerted a passer-by who escorted them to the police station.

“The accused was arrested on January 25, 2017 and was denied bail. He remained in custody throughout the trial.”

Tawana said that DNA results positively linked Mmusi to the crime scene and the rape incident.
