CHILD rape accused Aobakwe Johnny’s bail application has been postponed until Friday as he wishes to appoint a new legal representative.

Johnny, 27, was charged with the rape of an eight-year-old girl.

The regional spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Mojalefa Senokoatsane, said that Johnny appeared in the Jan Kempdorp Magistrate’s Court on May 23-24.

“The bail application was adjourned on May 24 as the applicant fired his legal representation,” said Senokoatsane. “The case has been postponed until May 27 to allow the accused to appoint new legal representation.”

The co-ordinator on gender-based violence in the Phokwane sub-region and chairperson of Phokwane Action For Development, Lebogang Banyatsi, stated that it would be in the best interest of the accused to remain in custody.

“Judgment on the bail hearing was supposed to be handed down on May 23 but could not proceed when the accused decided to find a new attorney. The community is very upset and will ensure that he remains in custody until the finalisation of the trial.”
