Car crashes into shanty

“I had to send the children away because I will not have anywhere else to sleep without my shanty.”

A MOTHER and her three young children narrowly escaped death when a car crashed into their shanty in Snake Park on Monday night, while they were sleeping.

Eyewitnesses said the driver of the car swerved into a pile of stones on the ground and crashed into the shanty at about 11pm.

The entire shack was destroyed, while furniture and a bed were damaged in the process.

The mother said that her children – aged six, seven and 11 years old – were sharing a bed in the two-room shanty when they heard a loud bang.

“There was dust everywhere, the car came crashing into the bedroom and the bed is dented. My seven-year-old was almost killed in the accident. We miraculously managed to escape serious injury with a few scratches and scrapes and went to the hospital for medical treatment,” the mother said.

She added that the driver of the vehicle drove off without stopping to check if they were injured.

She added that arrangements had been made that criminal charges would not be pressed against the driver, provided that he rebuilt the shanty and replaced the damaged furniture by yesterday.
