THE GALESHEWE police have opened an inquest docket after a 12-year-old-boy, Lesedi Setlhauno, drowned at Witdam pond behind the Galeshewe police station on Wednesday.

Lesedi drowned at around 4pm after he and some friends had decided to go for a swim. His body was retrieved by the police.

Police spokesperson Captain Bashoabile Kale said on Thursday that Lesedi is from Kuruman.

“Setlhauno is from Kuruman and visited his grandmother for the school holidays. [He and some friends] decided to cool off at the pond,” said Kale.

Kale said that the station commander, Brigadier Belinda Rikhotso, was saddened by the loss of such a young life and has pleaded with parents and guardians to always know the whereabouts of their children.

Rikhotso has called on the Sol Plaatje Municipality to assist with the closure of the pond as this is not the first drowning at the pond.
