Bookkeeper in court for allegedly defrauding Sars

A Kimberley bookkeeper appeared before the local magistrate’s court on Monday on charges of fraud.

LAZARUS William Meas, 48, appeared before the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of fraud.

Meas, a former bookkeeper at RK Henderson & Associates, was served with a summons for alleged fraud by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team.

Hawks spokesperson Captain Tebogo Thebe said it is alleged that in 2009, Meas unlawfully and with the intent to defraud made a misrepresentation to the Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (Sars) and submitted a nil income tax return.

“The accused knew that he received an amount of R2,294,699 and Sars suffered actual prejudice amounting to R856,609,” said Thebe.

“It is further alleged that during 2013, the accused did unlawfully and with intent to defraud, misrepresent to the Commissioner of Sars and submitted an income tax return of R914,650. The accused knew that he received an amount of R2,212,934 and an amount of R914,650.

“The Commissioner of Sars suffered actual prejudice amounting to R810,506.74.”

Thebe said the case was postponed to November 2, 2022, for the matter to be transferred to the Kimberley Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.
