BONITA Park residents have given the Phokwane Municipality seven days to respond to their demands, including the removal of the mayor.

Community members staged a march to the municipal offices in Hartswater on November 15, where they handed over a memorandum outlining their grievances. These included a lack of housing and allegations of corruption and mismanagement.

Residents expressed frustration over the municipality’s failure to provide basic services.

“We are forced to buy drinking water because there are worms in the municipal water and it is not fit for consumption,” they said.

The memorandum also highlighted that refuse workers had not been paid for seven months, resulting in uncollected garbage piling up in the area. Residents further complained about high interest rates being charged on outstanding municipal accounts.

“The electricity was switched off for seven days in Mountainview, Riemvasmaak and Donkerhoek. All our food and supplies were spoilt. There is a very high unemployment rate, especially among the youth, and we are unable to pay to unblock the electricity.”

Phokwane Municipality had not responded to media enquiries at the time of publication.
