THE SAPS Search and Rescue team, with the assistance of the Hartswater police, retrieved the body of a 35-year-old man from the canal near Lamoenkop plots in Hartswater on March 15, at about 11am.

The police and community members searched for Hartswater resident Jean Claudi Klaassens after he fell into a canal while fishing on March 12.

The search was hampered by high water levels and the Vaalharts Water Users Association reduced the water level by 30 percent at Hartswater to assist in the search last week.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said preliminary investigations indicated that the deceased apparently fell into the canal that is situated in Bonita Park, Hartswater, at around midday on March 12.

“The police have opened an inquest into the death. Any information that can assist the police can be forwarded to the Hartswater Detectives on 082 469 6228,” Kock added.
