THE DELPORTSHOOP police have opened an inquest into the death of an unknown man after a decomposed body was retrieved from the river near Delportshoop on Thursday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said a community member had on Thursday morning informed the SAPS about a body that was spotted in the river, where it was apparently hooked on the branch of a tree that was submerged by the water.

“The SAPS diving unit removed the body, which was in an advanced stage of decomposition,” said Kock.

“The deceased is an adult male, dark in complexion, 1.7 metres tall and he is of medium build. He was dressed in a grey overall jacket and was not wearing any trousers or shoes.”

Kock added that an autopsy would be performed to determine the cause of death.

“Anyone with information can call Detective Warrant Officer Jim Williams on 082 448 4850. The investigation continues.”
