Bobby Schultz, Galeshewe resident, all round sportsman and football legend has died.

Schultz, died on Tuesday last week at Robert Magaliso Sobukwe Hospital (RMS) from heart complications.

His only surviving daughter Daphne Themba said Schultz had gone to work at a local bank where he did casual work after his retirement.

Schultz and a colleague were driving through the Kimberley Central Business District in convoy. At some point he indicated to his colleague in the other vehicle to stop.

Schultz handed him his personal phone with the instruction that he call his family and drive him to the local hospital as he had chest pains.

Themba said medics at the hospital tried to revive the former sportsman who had lost consciousness but he succumbed shortly thereafter.

Schultz was popularly known as “Bobby Locke” during his football playing days when he turned out as a goalkeeper for the defunct Leeds United.

An old teammate at Leeds United, Andrew “Wire” Bosman tells how he, along with teammates Sheeraz Kazi, the late Duma Mmusi and others, had approached Schultz after they had played against his side Mangaung United in Bloemfontein. They persuaded Schultz to join Dalton Brothers.

“We went to recruit him in Bloemfontein,” Bosman told the DFA. “It was tough in the beginning but we got him to join us at Dalton. Later on a misunderstanding broke out at the club and I along with Sheeraz, Bobby, the late Mouck (sic), Lesley Leshoro, Duma Mmusi and others felt that what was happening at Dalton was not right. We all went on to form Leeds United.

“At Leeds it was a powerful set up. We were lucky we had Bobby with us,” Bosman added.

“Later we organised for him (Schultz) to get a job here a place to stay and he stopped going home (Bloemfontein). Sheeraz at some point organised for us to play against Kaizer XI (now Kaizer Chiefs). We also joined the Coloured league – Griqualand West. At the same time we went to play in the Coloured Professional League in Fordsburg.”

Schultz was born in Matlhomola, Bloemfontein in 1946. He was one of five siblings, two of whom survive him. He will be buried on Saturday from the Social Centre after a service starting at 8am.
