It was pointed out that it would be up to the branch executive committee to decide whether they would renew Block’s membership.

THE ANC in the Northern Cape, amid speculation that former ANC provincial chairperson John Block may be considered for early parole as part of the Covid-19 dispensation for 19 000 inmates, has indicated that his membership has lapsed.

ANC provincial spokesperson Tshepo Louw said the party would wait for the Department of Justice and Correctional Services “to do its work”.

“We cannot deny or confirm the matter of the former chairperson John Block … as we also heard from the grapevine. We will allow the department to do its work without any interference,” said Louw on Friday.

He pointed out that it would be up to the branch executive committee to decide whether they would renew Block’s membership.

“It is incumbent upon a member to renew or not to renew membership through a branch executive committee. The branch executive committee has the right to reject or accept membership renewal of such a member.”

Louw stated that in terms of their constitution, any member who stood for any position should not have been convicted in a court of law and been sentenced to a term of imprisonment, without option of a fine, for any offence.

“The ANC in Northern Cape has full confidence in the Department of Justice and Correctional Services that it will execute its duties without any prejudice.”
