Former Northern Cape Cricket Union financial manager Jean Pierre van Niekerk, 25, made a second appearance before the Kimberley Serious Commercial Crime Court for allegedly embezzling more than R400,000 from the union.

FORMER Northern Cape Cricket Union financial manager Jean Pierre van Niekerk, 25, made a second appearance before the Kimberley Serious Commercial Crime Court on January 19.

Van Niekerk was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime unit in November last year.

Hawks provincial spokesperson Warrant Officer Nomthandazo Mnisi said the unit investigated the alleged misappropriation of funds from the Northern Cape Cricket Union between July 2022 and March 2023, where Van Niekerk was employed as a financial manager.

“Payments that were due to service providers were deposited into his personal bank account. The entity suffered an actual loss exceeding R400,000 plus interest,” said Mnisi.

She added that Van Niekerk was released on bail of R5,000 and was expected to reappear in court on February 1.
