A WARRENTON couple was questioned by the police after the body of their eight-month-old baby girl was discovered buried in their backyard.

The police have confirmed that they are investigating an inquest case.

The decomposed body of the baby was exhumed from a grave by police and forensic officers at a home in Las Vegas on Saturday.

The body was discovered following an apparent confession by the couple after a family member raised the alarm.

The couple apparently pointed the police to a grave, dug next to a toilet in their backyard.

It is believed that the couple buried the baby after it died at home about two weeks ago.

Eyewitnesses said that the baby was buried in a plastic rice bag.

According to information the birth of the baby was never registered at the Department of Home Affairs, while friends of the family said that the baby had been ill since birth.

Police spokesperson Captain Olebogeng Tawana said that a preliminary investigation indicates that the baby died on January 5 this year and that the parents dug a shallow grave and buried the baby.

“The mother gave birth to this baby at home eight months ago without any medical assistance and failed to alert the health authorities about the birth of the baby,” Tawana said.

“Both parents were taken in for questioning before an inquest docket was opened pending the autopsy results.”
