A SIX-month-old baby girl was abandoned at the Northern Cape Legislature yesterday.

Community members have been requested to assist the police in tracing the mother and family of the baby left at the gates of the legislature yesterday morning.

The Galeshewe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences FCS unit confirmed that it is investigating a case of child abandonment after an unknown man dumped the baby at 6am yesterday morning.

According to police spokesperson Captain Bashoabile Kale, details regarding the man were sketchy as he left in a hurry after placing the baby at the gates of the legislature.

“The baby was handed over to the Galeshewe FCS unit for further handling and investigation,” Kale said.

He added that due to the fact that no one had reported a missing child at that stage, the baby had been placed at an undisclosed care centre while the investigation continued.

The Acting Station Commander of Galeshewe, Colonel Alexia Robertson, expressed her disappointment at the incident, questioning how such a young baby could be abandoned by her parents.
