The Kuruman police are searching for the mother of the newborn baby boy who was left in a toilet at the Kuruman taxi rank.

THE KURUMAN SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit is seeking the public’s assistance in locating the mother of a newborn baby who was found abandoned in a toilet at the Kuruman taxi rank on Sunday evening.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Mashay Gamieldien said that the four-day-old baby boy was found by a cleaner.

“A cleaner stated that she saw a woman entering the toilet carrying a baby. A while later, the cleaner noticed the unknown woman leaving the toilet without the baby. She went to investigate and found the baby unattended in the toilet,” said Gamieldien.

She added that the cleaner took the baby to the Kuruman police station.

“The baby was then taken to the Kuruman hospital for medical treatment.”

Gamieldien said a case of child abandonment is being investigated by the Kuruman FCS.

“The investigating officer, Constable Precious Schoeman, is requesting the assistance of the public in providing information that can lead to the apprehension and arrest of the mother.”

“All information will be treated confidentially,” Gamieldien added.
