“Deemed internal between the employer and the employee”.

A SENIOR inspector at the Northern Cape Department of Employment and Labour, who is based at the Upington offices, is apparently still receiving his salary although he has been absent from his post since April last year.

The official, Steffen Cornelius, is currently employed as the acting National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) provincial secretary at the Kimberley office.

The Department of Employment and Labour acknowledged receipt of a media enquiry but stated that it was “not at liberty to share the internal processes involving its officials or employees”.

The spokesperson for the Department of Employment and Labour, Kebalepile Khula, stated that the matter was “deemed internal between the employer and the employee”.

Questions posed to the department included whether Cornelius was receiving full payment while he was not reporting for duty in Upington, who was completing his duties and tasks and if officials were permitted to have other full-time employment.

Nehawu spokesperson Khaya Xaba referred enquiries back to the Department of Employment and Labour.

“We will not be responding.”

Cornelius acknowledged receipt of the media enquiry but did not respond by the time of going to print.
