A SIXTH person has been arrested in connection with an alleged multimillion-rand vehicle syndicate involving police officers and civilians.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers confirmed on Thursday that the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit arrested a 43-year-old sergeant attached to the Hartswater SAPS on January 8.

“He is facing charges of fraud and theft. Investigations continue,” Ehlers said.

Meanwhile, judgment on the bail applications of two SAPS officers, Detective Sergeant Khiba Zulu and Detective Sergeant Tshepo Thae, both from the Kimberley Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit, is expected to be handed down on January 15.

Their co-accused, Phenyo Sekutenyane, Shepherd Ndimande, and Thapelo Phandile, were released on bail of R10,000 each.

It is alleged that the accused seized vehicles worth an estimated R2.5 million in Kimberley with the intention of selling them in the city and in the Free State. The vehicles reportedly include a Jeep Cherokee, a BMW, a Porsche, and a Kia Rio.

The arrested sergeant is expected to be added to the charge sheet.
