The ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) in the Northern Cape has condemned the assault of a woman at a tavern in Colesberg.

THE ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) in the Northern Cape has condemned the assault of a woman at a tavern in Colesberg where she sustained injuries including damage to her eyesight.

The ANC Youth League regional chairperson in the Pixley ka Seme district, Andile Phololo, stepped aside following his arrest last week in connection with the incident that took place during the provincial Women’s Day celebrations.

ANCWL provincial task team convenor Mirriam Kibi said the woman sustained serious injuries to her eyesight and bruises to her face.

“The ANCWL has committed itself to campaign for an end to all forms of violence against women, children and other vulnerable groups. The ANCWL stands against gender-based violence and the struggle against patriarchy. Violence is traumatic and it can negatively affect certain aspects of an individual’s life. The degree of violence against women and girls, in our society, disregards the democracy which we fought so hard for. At times the delays within our criminal justice system in case management further refute victim’s justice and dignity through the healing process.”

She commended the ANCYL Pixley ka Seme regional leadership in their efforts to address the issue.

“It is distasteful and disdainful that this incident occurred during Women’s month at an event structured around the celebration of the, but also continued struggles of South African women.”

Kibi urged politicians to join forces across the political divide to eradicate gender-based violence.

“Gender-based violence is an immoral act and is something to be ashamed of. We pledge our solidarity with the complainant and will encourage our ANCWL regional task team in the Pixley ka Seme region to provide support for her and her family. We condemn the shrewd violent acts meted out by men against women, children and the elderly.”
