THE ANC won 59.61 percent of the vote (1,368 votes) during the Ward 2 by-election in Kai !Garib Municipality that took place last week.

The by-election was contested by the ANC, Hope for the Future and the EFF.

ANC candidate Regina Lipinge is the newly elected ward councillor.

Hope for the Future secured 36.64 percent of the vote (841 votes) while the EFF obtained 3.75 percent (86 votes).

There was a 59.39 percent voter turnout, where 1,295 voters cast their ballots out of a total of 2,752 registered voters.

The by-election was held following the death of the ward’s ANC councillor prior to the local government elections last year.

The ANC had made an urgent application to interdict the by-elections, although it went ahead as scheduled on February 2.

The ANC alleged that opposition parties had fraudulently registered up to 1,000 names on the voters roll, where voters did not reside in the ward.

According to the Electoral Commission, the ANC received 50.63 percent of the votes in the ward in the 2021 local government elections.
