THE ANC in the Northern Cape yesterday announced the passing of Mosela Mathe, a Provincial Executive Member (PEC), after a short illness.

“We mourn the passing on of one of our gentle giants, Comrade Mathe, who, at the time of her passing, was not only serving as a PEC member, but also as a chief whip at the Frances Baard District Municipality,” ANC provincial secretary Deshi Ngxanga said yesterday.

He added that Mathe dedicated her life to the struggle for a non-racial, non-sexist and democratic South Africa.

“Her selflessness and unwavering commitment to the women’s struggle is discernible in the various positions that she held in the Women’s League in the region – where she served as a Regional Executive Committee and a Regional Working Committee member in Frances Baard.

“The ANC has lost an irreplaceable leader and a constant reminder of dedication and selflessness. She embodied grace and humility.

“As we dip our black, green and gold banner in honour of this heroine of our revolution, we extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and comrades of Mathe.

“In her honour we will continue to advance the struggles of the poor and marginalised in our society. May her soul rest in peace,” Ngxanga concluded.

Sol Plaatje municipal spokesperson Sello Matsie said that Mathe served the community with humility.

“She was a hard-working, humble person. On behalf of the Sol Plaatje Municipality we extend our condolences to her political party, family and friends.”
