THE THREE men accused of orchestrating an armed robbery at a mall in Kathu on the weekend will remain in custody.
The accused, Andale Mxwele, 39, Nthole Litau, 30, and Celcimusa Tesla, 30, made a brief appearance in the Mothibistad Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of armed robbery, possession of suspected stolen property and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Hawks provincial spokesperson Nomthandazo Mnisi said the case was postponed until Wednesday to allow for the accused to arrange for legal representation.
“The suspects were arrested on Sunday in a joint operation by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, the Public Order Policing services and the Kuruman K9 unit,” said Mnisi.
“It is alleged that on August 22 an armed robbery took place at the Markham store in Kathu. The robbers managed to steal cellphones, clothing and an undisclosed amount of money before they fled the scene. The team followed up on information regarding the suspects and upon investigation the team established that another Markham store in Kuruman was also allegedly robbed by the same suspects.”
Mnisi added that the accused were found at a house in Maruping village.
“One suspect tried to escape after being cornered by the members and, as a result, he sustained a gun-shot wound to his shoulder.”
Various items that were reported stolen during the two robberies were recovered from the accused, including an undisclosed amount of money.
