THE ELECTRICITY supply to Sutherland, Fraserburg and Laingsburg is expected to be restored on Thursday, after power outages caused serious disruptions in the region following gale-force winds and heavy rain that damaged infrastructure earlier this month.

Northern Cape Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) spokesperson Babalwa Mzambo said communities have been left with no power and dwindling water supplies since the severe weather hit the area on February 2.

“So far, the municipality was able to restore the water levels. Eskom is said to be taking steps to address the challenges caused by the power outage. As a result, the electricity is expected to be restored on February 15,” said Mzambo.

She added that the MEC for Coghsta, Bentley Vass, was actively working to find a solution to the challenges.

“The MEC for Social Development, Nontobeko Vilakazi, has pledged to supply the soup kitchen with enough food to feed more people. Additionally, the old age home will serve as a kitchen point to accommodate more residents.”

Mzambo added that a meeting was scheduled with Eskom, telecommunication network providers, banks and provincial government departments to intervene in assisting affected communities.
